Knowing of the concept of “the bug” that spreads through sexual contact among teenagers led me to believe the story was going to focus more on the “otherness” of sex as a teenager, and the simultaneous need for and fear of it, as well as the social implications (especially in a high school) of this outwardly visible display of who had “done it”, and who hadn’t. I knew the core concept of of the book, I had seen some of the psychedelic spreads, and I knew how widely praised the book was. I had high hopes for the book, but was left feeling underwhelmed, at least partly due to my own expectations. I finally read Black Hole by Charles Burns, after years of it being one I’d “get to eventually”.
